During our second week we went to the Waltzing Matilda Exhibition housed at the Tourist Information Centre. You do need to pay to go in and see it, but it is full of information about A.B.Paterson, Winton, Shearers Strike, Opalton and you then get to go out the back and see the machinery, Steam Train and cottage. It also houses the biggest collection of glass bottles we have ever seen! Well worth the visit! (15) Facebook
We had dinner at the Australia Hotel twice, the Stockman's stew was great, as was the Roast of the Day & Seafood basket!
When we were at dinner, they had Patti La-Marr Duo in, Patti & John were lovely and if they perform near you they are worth seeing! Home | Australian Hotel Winton
They are very big birds! Winton Historic Cemetery – Experience Winton
Had a look in the main street at the sculptures - the Waltzing Matilda one is very good. It is outside Corfield & Fitzmaurice General Merchants, so we headed there next.
This is the oldest business in Winton and well worth a visit, for a gold coin you can go in and see the historic and geological display and the shop section of the store has some great Winton souvenirs and locally made craft items. Corfield and Fitzmaurice Building (queensland.com) We went into the Royal Theatre to see the historic display which is worth popping in to, old projectors, cans of film! Home - The Royal Open-Air Theatre Winton (royaltheatrewinton.com.au) Then off to Arno's Wall, a truly different fence! It contains sewing machines, sink, hubcaps and many more unusual items Arno's Wall – Experience Winton We also checked out Willie Mars Heritage Market Garden Site, it was a very basic shop but one that was needed in the town. It appears that they are currently doing up the site for visitors, but you can still go and see it as it is. Arno's Wall – Experience WintonThe musical fence was a joy to visit and we went twice, I mean who does not like to hit things with a stick and make a musical noise! Musical Fence – Experience Winton it is also right in front of the QANTAS original landing field site, there is a metal plane sign erected there and is a good photo opportunity Birthplace of QANTAS – Experience Winton
we had previously visited the site of the Winton Club where QANTAS began! The Winton Club – Experience Winton
As the last day was upon us we planned an evening out. We headed to the other Winton Sign for a sunset photo, then off to the Caravan Park opposite the Roadhouse to watch Gregory North (Bush Poet) do a show! It has been sad to leave this lovely little town!
